Welcome to Reception J's Class Page

The staff working in Reception J and throughout Reception are: Miss Fitzpatrick, Miss Wilson, Miss Wilkinson, Miss King and Mrs Alderson.

Whenever you have any questions about school and your child, please speak to a member of the reception team. If you need to speak to the class teacher, or a member of the reception team at the start or end of the day, please do so. Alternatively you can telephone the school office asking to speak to Miss Fitzpatrick, or send an e-mail to: d.fitzpatrick@primrosehill.owlcotesmat.org

Children enjoy learning through play, and often talk about their learning as play. Learning in reception is accessed through real, meaningful experiences.  This provides inspiration, challenge and ideas for future learning. Self- initiated play and adult led and directed learning, supports children in further developing areas of interest and ensures access to a wide range of opportunities.  We look forward to sharing all of this with you, in part, through this class page.

Our theme for some of our learning this half term is:

Alive and Kicking

Widening Our Horizons! W/C 01-07-19

This week children across Reception had the opportunity to engage in four unfamiliar activities and to learn new skills. Reception J started off their week by learning how to Rock and Roll. They had so much fun learning the basic steps and enjoyed practicing these steps in partners, whilst dancing to music. They then participated in 'Laughter Yoga' which definitely increased their happiness! On Thursday they spent time with the current Year One teachers, learning how to play the Djembe drums and how to create origami rattle snakes!

Growing our own Beanstalks! W/C 24-06-19

Last week in Reception we planted our own 'magic' beans. We wrote step by step instructions explaining to others how to plant a bean and have spent this week looking after them. We have made sure they have had plenty of water and sunlight and have started to see our very own beanstalks grow! We are so excited about this. Can you help us decide which child's is the biggest so far?

Hesketh Farm! 21-06-19

Today Reception visited Hesketh Farm. The children enjoyed making lamb and calf feed and then giving it to the animals, going on a tractor ride, going on a paddock walk to look at lots of different farm animals, holding and feeding guinea pigs, and collecting chicken eggs before looking at the chicks. The children really enjoyed their day and behaved wonderfully.

Art Super Learning Day! 10-06-19

In class today we have thoroughly enjoyed developing our drawing skills. During whole class learning times we talked about the reasons why we draw, which drawing tools we use to draw and how drawing is about the process, not the end product. We then engaged in lots of drawing activities: drawing pictures of flowers in the outdoor classroom with chalks, pencils and felt tip pens, drawing pictures of the things we made in the ‘Make It’ area and our favourite - sketching halve of a self-potrait, using a photograph of one side our face as a stimulus. We have had lots of fun!

One is a Snail, Ten is a Crab. W/C 03-06-19

This week in Reception we have enjoyed reading the story of 'One is a Snail Ten is a Crab'. During our PE lesson on Tuesday we transformed into the different characters from the story and experimented with ways of moving. We then looked closely at the legs each of the characters have and represented numbers using them, for example 1 is a snail, 4 is a dog, 1 add 4 equals 5. Our Maths focus this week involved making 10 and 20 using the animals legs.

Save the Bees! W/C 20-05-19

After attending their first focus week launch assembly of the year (Changes for the Better), Reception were given an important mission - to find out why we need bees. Throughout the week they learned lots of facts about bees, why they are important and why we as a community need to work together to save them. They then produced some fantastic ‘Save the Bees’ posters.

PC Rachel Visits Reception! 08-05-19

This week in reception we have enjoyed reading the story of 'What the Ladybird Heard'. Did you know that the end of the story shows police officers putting Hefty Hugh and Lanky Len (two robbers) into their panda car and taking them to jail? On Wednesday morning, as we arrived into class, a special visitor appeared - PC Rachel! She told us all about her job and the different ways she helps people.

Counting Larger Groups of Objects. W/C 29-04-19

This week in maths we have practiced counting out larger groups of objects to represent the numbers 1-20. We named the numbers we could see on the doctors and then matched the correct amount of doctors bags to them. Some of us found counting out objects to represent higher teen numbers tricky but we are going to keep on practicing this!

Our Visit from Doctor Hart. 29-04-19

Today Reception had a special visitor come into class - Doctor Hart. They learnt all about the tools she uses to check our hearts, lungs, ears, eyes, mouth and nose. Children enjoyed getting involved with a bandage workshop and continued learning about the role of a doctor in their very own doctor's surgery!

Special Delivery! 23-04-19

After lunch today, we came back into class and found that something really special had been delivered - eggs! This sparked excitement across Reception and lots of discussion between us - Who left the eggs? Where did they come from? What's inside them? What's going to happen when they hatch? Over the next few days we will predict what we think the eggs are and what we think will happen to them when they hatch. Once this challenge has been completed, the answers will be revealed!

Egg Hunt! 19-04-19

This afternoon whilst we were sitting on our carpet Miss Fitzpatrick spotted something big, white and fluffy hopping around our outdoor classroom. We thought it might be the Easter bunny so we went outside to investigate and found some chocolate eggs! When we had found an egg for ourselves we showed what kinds friends we are by helping other children find one too.

Reception Train Trip to Leeds. 17th April 2019

This week we went on an exciting adventure to Leeds Train Station. We travelled by train from New Pudsey Station to Leeds and thoroughly enjoyed the challenge of finding out about important people in the community - people who help us. We met some police officers, information clerks, a concierge, surveyors, train conductors, station supervisors and more! Highlights from our trip included going through a dark tunnel whilst on the train, having a biscuit whilst watching trains come in and out of the station, trying on a police officer's helmet and spotting different types of transport whilst we were in Leeds city centre.

Fractions Super Learning Day 25-03-19

As part of our whole school Fractions Super Learning Day, Reception were introduced to the concept of halving. We talked about what halving meant (sharing something into two equal parts), and enjoyed halving cupcakes, playdough and snack. We also spent time completing pictures which were half drawn and colouring in half of a shape. Outdoors, we measured distance by finding half way between two points.

Doubling. W/C 18-03-19

This week we have been learning how to double numbers. We have loved listening to songs all about doubles and finding out different ways to solve doubling problems. Some of the different methods we found were; using our fingers, using Numicon, using objects and even using a number line to help us count on.

Across Reception this week we have enjoyed learning about different types of transport. We have completed various challenges including: labelling vehicles, making vehicles in the junk modelling area, reading sentences and matching them to their correct picture and using our looking eyes to find some vehicles which contain our phase 3 sounds. We have been very busy!

Measuring!

This we week we have really enjoyed learning all about measuring. We have enjoyed finding out different ways we can measure and the language we can use. We particularly enjoyed finding out about who in our class we were taller or shorter than. We were surpirsed to find sometimes that being older didnt always mean we were taller. In our maths focus we were set the challenge of ordering the 3 Little Pigs sticks in length order and then measure them using the connector cubes.

Measuring!
One more, One less

This week we have been securing our knowledge on knowing numbers that are one more and one less than numbers to 10. We linked our leaarning to the Gingerbread Man and the buttons he has on his body.

'Where the wild things are'

Today for our Design and Technology Super Learning Day the children designed and made their own 'Wild Thing' sock puppet. The children enjoyed thinking about what features their Wild Thing would have. Some puppets had sharp teeth, big eyes, long hair and even claws! Children also enjoyed putting on shows for their friends using the puppets in our puppet theater.

Where's Wally?

This week we have received lots of postcards from Wally! We have been guessing where he has visited in our local area. On Monday he sent us a postcard from ASDA so we wrote our own shopping lists and some of us went to go and see if we could find him. On Tuesday we guessed that he had visited Pudsey Park, a group of us went and looked to see if we could see the things that Wally had talked about in his postcard like the big climbing net and the visitors centre. On Wednesday he sent us a postcard from the leisure centre so lots of us talked about the things we have done when we have been to the leisure centre, we even had a go at drawing some pictures and doing some writing! On Thursday we were not sure where we thought Wally was so we used the computer to help us, it suggested that he was at Yeadon Tarn so some of us went in the minibus to see what we could see. Friday’s postcard was from Leeds so we talked about the times we had visited Leeds. We also made some biscuits that looked just like Wally!

Snails!

We have been caring for our class snails. We have been giving them a bath, making sure they have fresh soil and lots of yummy food.

Apple Picking in the School Orchard!

Today we were very excited to visit the school orchard to pick some apples. We looked carefully around the orchard for apples on the branches. Some we had to reach high for and others were hidden low down among the leaves. When our buckets were full and heavy we headed back into school. Once back in the classrorom we had lots of fun sorting the apples in different ways. Some children wanted to sort them by colour, others wanted to sort them into different sizes. After we finished sorting them we needed to wash them before coming together on the carpet to try some. We thought they were delicious and were very happy to learn we still had enough left over to each take one home at the end of the day to show our grown ups.

Flower Power!

We looked at and had a smell of some sweet pea flowers. Some of the children enjoyed identifying all of the different colours they could see and drew pictures. The children carefully selected colours to match the flowers. Well done! Some children called the sweet peas "rainbow flowers."

Our first week at school!

We have had lots of fun this week exploring our new classrooms both inside and outside. We have enjoyed keeping busy accessing lots of activities and meeting new friends. We have also impressed the grown ups with showing off all the things we already know. We can't wait for next week when we can get to know each other's wonderful personalities even more!
