Day 3 News Flash

The children created group newspapers of news from the UK. They worked collaboratively to write the news stories and create pictures and weather report. They also created their own dinosaur sketches using a video model to help with their sketching.

The children discovered some dinosaur bones on the school field this morning and then an expert introduced them to 7 year old Tina the T-rex. Y5FJ then learnt about a dinosaur of their choice and fed back in news style to the rest of the class. They also took witness statements and turned them into quotes.

Here are the finished Egyptian masks. The children have loved creating them and are very proud of the finished products.

Science Day

In school on the 25th June we had a day all about sound. The children did practical experiments investigating sound. They investigated the pitch, volume and how sound travels.

On Tuesday 19th June all of Year 5 went to the Science and Media Museum to learn about Sound. The children all had a fantastic day and loved learning all about sound in the Wonderlab.

In class we have been making Egyptian death masks. Here are some of the children painting theirs.

DT Super Learning day

During our super learning day we made an Egyptian Shaduf, which was used in ancient Egyptian times to transport water from the river. The children were presented with a range of materials and had a go at making and then improving their designs.

Express Yourself Focus Week

Day 2- The children wrote the narrative to the video 'Free'. Here are some of the examples.

Day 1- The children watched the music video 'Free' by Rudimental and Emeli Sande and wrote from the man/boy's perspective explaining how he felt at different points in the video. IN the afternoon they did their own crests and bunting flags to represent their identity. We also made our own class crest.

Science Blast

In our Science Blast we focused on line graphs. We created practical line graphs to show the temperature change over the day.

Mummification

The children found out about Mummification and the process that the Egyptians carried out in order to reach the afterlife. Here are some of the children's learning.

Can something as soft as rain dissolve something as strong at rock? The children investigated this question using vinegar, water, lemon juice and chalk. We are leaving the chalk in the liquids for a few days and then we will be looking back to see if our predictions are correct.

Egyptian Dancing

On Monday 23rd April. A lady from the Leeds Rhinos came in to teach the children some Egyptian dancing. The children had a fantastic time and showed they were able to pick up the moves well. They can't wait for next week!!

Science Super Learning day

As part of our discovery and exploration Science Super Learning day. We carried out a number of investigations and even made Aztec Poo! From this we were able to investigate what fossilized faeces can reveal about the diet, lifestyle, and health of an ancient Aztec!

Fair Trade - Geography Super Learning Day

As part of our Geography learning we learnt about what Fair Trade means and where some Fair Trade foods originate from. When learning about Fair Trade coffee, we made chocolate coffee truffles and even designed some of the packing for this wonderful treats. See our learning here!

World Book Day

This afternoon we had a lot of fun trying to guess a book character from someones silent actions and then made laminated personalised book marks to go with our new read aloud at home books.

Stone Age Settlement & Stone Age Tools

We have linked our knowledge of the Stone Age with our DT skills this term. As a result, we have made some excellent Stone Age tools and weapons and even built our very own Neolithic settlement. Check out our learning here!

Herd Farm Stone Age Workshops.

Our week ended with two very exciting workshops lead by Stone Age experts from Herd Farm. We learned all about how tools have evolved over time and made comparisons between a burial site in the Stone Age and its present day equivalent. Take a look at some of our learning here.

P.E

In P.E we have been improving our gymnastic skills. This week we created some dynamic balance routines, which also used symmetry - take a look here!

Today we learned about the skills we needed to be archaeologists. Working in groups, we carefully uncovered a range of wonderful and rare artifacts, which we needed to piece together to help us with our history learning.

Thank you again to the brilliant Northern Arts Factory for helping us to develop our drama skills. We've has a fantastic time choreographing our own sequences, developing our voice projection skills, and learning about stage fighting!

Y5S had an absolutely amazing day participating in team building and brain-teasing activities. We worked incredibly hard to complete each of the challenges as a group. Here are some pictures of the adventures we had!

Using mathematical equipment, the children were asked to draw the discovered planet before using a mixture of oil pastels and chalks to create an accurate representation of the planet as well as the atmosphere in outer space.

Virtual Reality

Year 5 really enjoyed using virtual reality headsets to journey through space and learn lots of new facts about the planets within our solar system. Children were able to compare each planet to earth and it gave them a fantastic insight into how other planets are different from earth
