We will be learning all about different animals, recapping the countries and capitals of the UK and learning to code!
French Super Learning Day

Today we learnt about the French language and culture. We started by learning the words for different foods and then played a matching game with the French words for numbers. In the afternoon we learnt the words for colours in French and coloured our own pictures of the Tour de France. Finally, we practised French conversation skills with our learning partners!

Digital Literacy Afternoon

Through the books 'MonkeyCow' and 'PenguinPig', we discussed how to keep safe online. We talked about the importance of keeping personal information safe and private, especially passwords, and designed our own 'safe places' like the girl in 'MonkeyCow' (see photos). We also talked about how not everything you read on the internet is true, and what to do if you see or read something you're not sure about.

In the News Focus Week

This week we have been discovering dinosaur bones all around school! The children have discussed how news is made and the different places it can come from, and have done their own news reports on the strange events. Have a look at some highlights in this video!

Science - Animal Research

Today we used the iPads to research different types of animals (reptiles, amphibians, birds, mammals, and fish) and put all our information together to share key facts about animals.

Art Super Learning Day: Sketching, Thaumatropes and Rotoscoping

On Art Super Learning Day we started the day with some sketching of the characters from Zootropolis. Some children followed a step-by-step guide, while others worked on tracing a picture of the characters. We then made our own 'Thaumatropes', spinning a circular paper with two different images to create a moving one. We also worked on our part of the whole school 'Rotoscoping' project, which will be online soon!

Art Super Learning Day: Monkey Animations

We discussed how art plays an important part in animation and how animation films originally started from a number of different drawings put together quickly. We then coloured in trees and monkeys and worked in pairs to create our own animations on Animate It!

DT Super Learning Day

We spent all day learning how to make a puppet in Year 1! The children chose what animal design they would like to make and worked really hard at joining all the pieces together.

Express Yourself Focus Week

This is US! We have spent this week thinking about what makes us special, by designing our own bunting, decorating our own boxes, sharing some of our special items and photographs and making a big collage across Year 1 of all of our faces! We also learned the song 'This is Me', which has been put together in a fantastic video featuring the whole school - check it out on the 'Whole School Events' page.

Express Yourself Focus Week
Pictograms

To kick off Express Yourself week, we thought about our favourite foods, subjects, animals and colours and made pictograms!

Food Tech - Fruity Faces!

This week Year 1 learned the 'tunnel technique' of cutting to make faces out of fruit!

Science - The Senses

This term we are learning about the human body and our 5 senses. Today we did a scavenger hunt to find things that looked/felt/sounded different and did a taste test to see which water was salty and which was sweet!

Zoo Descriptions

Y1O designed their own zoos this week and wrote descriptions of them, after planning on their own personal Mighty Writer!

Primrose Hill News!

Breaking News: Y1O has been to Thackray Medical Museum this week. Here are our news anchors to tell you more.

Thackray Medical Museum

Year 1 had a fantastic time on their trip to Thackray Medical Museum. They really impressed the teacher with their knowledge of Florence Nightingale and her life as a nurse and learned lots of new things too. They had a lot of fun sorting items from hospitals before and after Florence, although they didn't particularly enjoy the smells of sweaty feet and dirty bed linen! Finally, they got to dress up as nurses and porters to travel all the way to Scutari hospital. They were brilliant at following Florence's orders to get the hospital ship shape and looking after a wounded soldier.

90s Dance Moves!

As part of Back In Time Focus Week, Y1O made a valiant effort at learning some new dance moves, including an attempt at the Macarena!

Back In Time Focus Week

This week we went back to the 90s! We learned all about what was popular in the 90s and tried our own versions of Bridget Riley's Nataraja painted in 1993.

Science Super Learning Day

We have had a brilliant day of experimenting! We started by looking at 'walking water' as food colouring spread across different coloured cups. We then experimented to see if people are the same height as their armspan. One of the highlights of the day was creating our own rainclouds with shaving foam and blue food colouring. We also looked at sugar cubes to see how they changed in different kinds of liquids, and sprayed different liquids on ice with a 'magic powder' to see how it reacted. The children worked really well together and had a great time asking questions, making predictions and describing their observations. Our last experiment of the day was to see how long it took for sugar cubes to soak up food colouring (and see how high it would get up our sugar tower)! Look at the last photo to see how far it had climbed after 2 hours and 15 minutes.

Science Super Learning Day
Science and Capacity

This week we have been getting hands on with maths and science! In maths we explored measuring capacity with different containers of water, and in science we sorted deciduous and evergreen leaves before going out to the playground and spotting the different trees for ourselves.

Geography Super Learning Day

Today we learnt all about Fairtrade and why it is important to buy Fairtrade products. We focussed on bananas in Year 1, creating some lovely Fairtrade posters and making delicious banana splits!

Geography Super Learning Day
Plant Diagrams

Today we learned about different parts of a plant and what the function of each part was, creating some lovely pictures while learning!

Teddy Bear's Picnic

If you go down to the woods today, you better go in disguise...All of Year 1 got their bear disguises on and headed to the 'woods' in the hall to have a teddy bear picnic! They brought the biscuits they decorated in Super Learning Day and after eating had a teddy bear dance off. We finished the picnic by a big game of 'huggy bear' in the playground and the children will be writing about their experience later this week.

Teddy Bear's Picnic
History Super Learning Day

Y1O went back in time this week and learned about what school used to be like! We did a tour of the school and looked at old and new things, and then split into boys and girls for the afternoon. The boys did Victorian style drills and the girls decorated biscuits before both groups swapped to see what it was like!

ACES Tag Rugby

What better way to do maths than by running around outside? With the support of Kyle from ACES, Y1O spent Friday afternoon practising their number bonds and mental addition skills at the same time as playing tag rugby! They loved the 'huggy bear' warm up and racing each other to get the most tags.

Special Guest!

We were very excited this afternoon to have a special guest visitor - Isla's mum! Kirsty came in to tell the children about the toys she had when she was a child. A particular highlight was seeing how My Little Pony has changed over the years - same concept but bigger eyes and more flashing lights! The children loved thinking of questions and hearing all about the toys Kirsty used to play with.

PSHE Super Learning Afternoon

Welcome to gummy bear town! Each child had their own gummy bear who they gave a name to and decided their likes and dislikes. They answered questions in groups about what the best thing to do in different situations was and who was responsible for different problems in our gummy bear town.

Peter Pan Focus Week

In our Write Now Focus Week, the children used the story of Peter Pan to develop their creativity! They wrote postcards from the Mermaid Lagoon, the Jolly Roger and the Lost Boys' hideout, and made their own salt dough maps of Neverland. They also created Tiger Lilly headbands, pixie dust and Captain Hook's hook!

The Gingerbread Man

We've done some fantastic learning around the story of The Gingerbread Man! In science we tested what materials would protect the Gingerbread Man from the river, and in DT we created our own hand puppets of the Gingerbread Man! We have also been using Mighty Writer in literacy to write the story - look through the gallery to find some great examples of our writing.

3D Shapes

We have been learning about 3D shapes this term by sorting them, naming them and building them!

Around the World Focus Week

Year 1 have enjoyed exploring the world this week. In Jamaica, as well as playing some reggae using a range of instruments, some of the children were brave enough to try some ginger cake and ginger beer. In Kenya, the children embraced their creative talents to make masks and sunset pictures. In Japan, there was sushi making and chopstick challenges. Here are some photos from their time in Japan!
