Children enjoy learning through play, and often talk about their learning as play. Learning in Reception is through real, meaningful experiences, which provide inspiration, challenge and ideas for future learning. Self- initiated play and adult led and directed learning, supports children in further developing areas of interest and ensures access to a wide range of opportunities.  We look forward to sharing all of this with you, in part, through this class page.

Hesketh Farm Trip

On Wednesday we went on our class trip to Hesketh Farm. We learnt so much about the different animals and had a very busy day doing lots of fun activities. Some of our favourite activities were making the milk to feed the calves and lambs, holding and brushing the Guinea pigs and going on a bumpy tractor ride around the paddocks. We were also very excited to find that a Giant Tortoise had come to join us when we were eating our packs lunches! After having a play in the maze and climbing frame we returned to our Double Decker bus to come back to school. We were very tired from helping Framer Chris all day but very happy that we got to make wonderful memories.

The Royal Wedding

This afternoon we started the celebrations early for the wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle by having a fab party filled with lots of dancing, games and buns outside. We also thought it would be good fun to role play Prince Harry and Meghan making their way through the crowds in their horse drawn carriage. We cheered them on and waved our Union Jack flags that we had made earlier in the day. We all had a wonderful time and cant wait to see the real wedding happen over the weekend.

We love our chicks!

Over the last couple of weeks we have been learning about the life cycle of a chicken by caring for real life chicken eggs that we got from the farm! We learnt all about how to look after them in the classroom and we waited very patiently for 20 days whole days before we started to see peck holes appear on the eggs. On the morning of day 21 we were very excited to see that 4 chicks had hatched overnight! The children have loved watching them grow and have all had opportunity to hold one. We have done lots of learning linked to the chicks such as making information books, designing a house and we even used the large construction pieces outside to make them a play park!

Train Trip

During our topic learning about transport we had the exciting opportunity to go on a train to Leeds. The week before we went on the train trip our cheeky class pets George and Max escaped form our classrooms on go an adventure together. To ensure we knew they were safe and happy they sent us pictures showing us what they had been up to. Max and George told us they had overheard us talking about the train trip and wanted to experience it for themselves so had gone into Leeds on the train!! George and Max also told us they had been staying at the Queens Hotel and been to see their favourite statue as well as visited McDonalds for their lunch. When we went on our train trip we saw lots of the places George and Max had visited before finding them both on the steps of the Queens Hotel waiting for us! We had a wonderful time on our trip and were all so happy to have Max and George back with us again. We now know we need to keep a closer eye on them so they don't escape on an adventure without us again!

"just a little bit more"

This week the children worked together in twos to make buns. They took it in turns to use the scales to weigh their ingredients and help their friend to know when the scales were balanced. The children use good mathematical language throughout and enjoyed being able to see if they needed to add more or have less for the scales to balance with the egg.

We are good friends!

For our P.S.H.E Super Learning Day this week we were set the challenge of taking care of a new jelly bear friend that we were given at the start of the day. The children gave their jelly bears their own name and personalities and introduced them to their friends around them. Throughout the day the children thought carefully about how to be a good carer/friend to their jelly bear and enjoyed doing lots of busy activities with them. Some children read stories to them, made paintings and birth certificates for them as well as built homes to keep them safe. During the afternoon we also had chance to choose a friend to share a gingerbread man with. When sharing their gingerbread men, the children took turns to say something nice about their friend which we all agreed was lovely to hear. What great friends we are in Rec M!

Peter Pan - Writing Focus Week

We have had a super exciting time in Reception this week doing lots of learning linked to the story of Peter Pan. We have had lots of fun trying to save Peter Pan from Captain Hook. We have had a visit from a real life pirate and video messages left from both Tinkerbell and our friend Peter! The children have been busy writing letters to the characters, drawing and labeling pictures of crocodiles to scare Captain Hook, making traps and Lost Boy hideouts with Lego. We have also had lots of fun re telling the story of Peter Pan with both puppet shows and role-play masks. Peter even left us some treasure to say thank you for all our super learning!

P.E Training with Leeds Rhinos!

Over the next 3 weeks Mr Lawson from Leeds Rhino's will be teaching us how to improve our throwing and catching skills. In our first session we had lots of fun playing lots of listening games and learning some new skills to help us aim a ball at a target when rolling and throwing with accuracy. We really enjoyed our first session and can't wait to do more with Mr Lawson next week!
