Orangutan Research - All Creatures Great and Small Focus Week

This week we are learning about the Bornean and Sumatran Orangutans, who are both critically endangered. To become experts, we have researched all about these amazing creatures and created our very own fact files. Take a look here.

National Space Academy

Last term, children in Year 5 and 6 had an exciting visit from Conor who works for the National Space Academy. During the education project, the children learnt all about space rockets over time and how and why they have evolved. Then, using the heat lights, the children were given the challenge of working out which tone of paint would be most suitable for the next space mission.

Community Arts at the Owlcotes Subway – Seagulls Reuse Ltd

Recently we have worked with the Community Arts Team at Seagulls Reuse Ltd to work on an art project to improve the area around the tunnel adjacent to our school. Seagulls have just been awarded funding from local Councillors to work with the community and produce a large scale mosaic installation for the exterior subway wall that looks onto the school. We look forward to seeing it take shape.

Advice Poems

In class we have enjoyed exploring 'what to do' and 'what not to do' in certain situations. By sharing our ideas, we were then able to create Advice Poems. Here our some of our poems about what you can do if you are scared, upset, or angry. We hope you enjoy them and find them helpful!

'Write Now' Focus Week learning

Here is some of our learning from the 'Write Now' focus week. In this lesson we looked closely at how characters were feeling in the story 'The Dark' by Lemony Snicket. We created two different types of emotions charts and found evidence from the text to support our ideas.

Mayan Masks

The Maya used masks for a variety of reasons and occasions. These included to decorate the faces of the dead as well as to be worn during battle. Other masks were designed to be worn during important events such as weddings and birth ceremonies. These masks often depicted gods or animals and used amazing designs with bright, vibrant colours painted onto wooden surfaces. In Y5S we are going to make our own masks. Here are some of our initial designs.

Mayan Dance

This half term in PE we looked at some examples of Mayan dance. We then explored different body positions and how to use them to make a powerful stance. We had fun naming the different positions and hope you enjoy looking at our different movements.

There's something in the ice!!

For this 'Science Blast!' we were archaeologist discovering fossils in the ice! Just like the baby mammoth discovery, we needed to find the best way of melting ice, without damaging the historic artifact inside! Testing a range of methods, we discovered that warm salt-water allowed us to reach the mysterious object buried deep beneath the surface in the quickest time, whilst causing no damage to the 'fossil'. Ask us: Why do you use salt to treat ice during winter?

Transition day!

Here are some of the amazing Lego builds we created for our very own imaginary Lego Land Leeds theme park and resort. We all worked together to design and build rides which might appear at a real theme park! Explaining our creations to the class really helped us to learn more about each other, and these unique designs helped us to create some wonderful writing for our 'Write On folders'! Dragons' Den here we come...
