National Space Academy

On Wednesday, children in Year 5 and 6 had an exciting visit from Conor who works for the National Space Academy. During the education project, the children learnt all about space rockets over time and how and why they have evolved. Then, using the heat lights, the children were given the challenge of working out which tone of paint would be most suitable for the next space mission. The session ended with some thought provoking questions such as - can rockets take off in the rain? Connor answered this expertly linking it to the children’s experiences of bonfire night.

NXT Robots

Today Y5C visited Crawshaw Academy to use the NXT robots. The children completed a series of tasks to develop the skills they required. Using these newly developed skills, the children then completed a range of different challenges. We hope you enjoy looking at some of our learning.

Flutag Challenge

UKS2 carried out a Flutag challenge today. In Y5C this involved children learning about what would make an effective home-made flying machine. The children then worked with their learning partners to design their structures before they were discussed with Miss Colman. Throughout the day children showed an increase in their knowledge of fastening techniques using a range of design materials and showed kindness to their friends who at times felt a little overwhelmed by the competition. After the UKS2 competition, Miss Colman was very proud that her class achieved both first and third place but was most impressed by the positive team work which was seen throughout the day.

On the Move Focus Week - futuristic planes

So far during this week, the children have learnt about the pros and cons of aviation. They have then researched a chosen form of aviation and drawn a sketch of it. Today’s challenge was to plan a futuristic model of their chosen plane – this was not an easy task and involved lots of decision making. Here are some reports on the learning which have been produced using the ‘Green Screen’ or the Interactive white board.

Transport timeline

We began this exciting Focus Week with trying to predict the chronology of different methods of transport. We had so many to order that we had to move our learning to the hall.

Mayan Headdresses

Today the children took to the hall and paraded down the Mayan catwalk before taking their final pose. We hope you enjoy looking at some of our creative learning. Next week (after we have made some vital repairs) we are going to wear them in our Mayan Dance performance.

Hands on Mathematicians

Today in Maths we focused on understanding metric and imperial units of measure and reading scales. The children were interested about how units of measurement have changed and why this happened. Here are some pictures of us busying away.

Science Super Learning Day

Today we have been given the challenge to investigate which materials are good insulators of heat. We learnt how the warmer liquids contain faster moving particles and then invented our own cups to try and contain as much heat energy as possible. We hope you enjoy looking at a sample of our learning.

Maths Roadshow

Today we have had a brain teasing session in Maths completing a selection of practical mathematical problems and puzzles. As you can see below, some of the children were extremely proud of their achievements.

Mayan Dance sequences

Today we watched and reflected on our previous dance sequences. From this, we then produced our final versions. Our next challenge is to incorporate them into the whole class Mayan dance which we are going to choreograph as a team.

Community Arts at the Owlcotes Subway – Seagulls Reuse Ltd

Today we have worked with the Community Arts Team at Seagulls Reuse Ltd to work on an art project to improve the area around the tunnel adjacent to our school. Seagulls have just been awarded funding from local Councillors to work with the community and produce a large scale mosaic installation for the exterior subway wall that looks onto the school. We look forward to seeing it take shape.

Mayan Mask designs

The Maya used masks for a variety of reasons and occasions. These included to decorate the faces of the dead as well as to be worn during battle. Other masks were designed to be worn during important events such as weddings and birth ceremonies. These masks often depicted gods or animals and used amazing designs with bright, vibrant colours painted onto wooden surfaces. In Y5C we are going to make our own masks. Here are some of our initial designs.

Mayan Dance

Today in PE we looked at some examples of Mayan dance. We then explored different body positions and how to use them to make a powerful stance. We had fun naming the different positions and hope you enjoy looking at our different movements.

Silent Shadow Stories.

Over the last week, we have been working on our unique, silent shadow stories. There were many different versions of creation stories about how the sun was made! However, all were amazing in their own way. We got our inspiration from Britain’s got talent winners ATTRACTION!

Bright Sparks Focus Week

This week we have completed a challenge to check our understanding of scientific words by matching cards. We also had a lot of fun completing a challenge in pairs. Sat with their backs to each other and using one mirror each the children had to try and see if they could see each other’s faces as a reflection. These were then drawn. We hope you enjoy looking at our pictures.

Science Blast

The children enjoyed carrying out a whole class fair test using M and M’s this week. They made some very thought provoking predictions about which colour confectionary contained the most and least food colouring.

Art Super Learning Day

Today was a lot of fun. The first challenge the children were set was to make their own sketch books. They then completed a timed challenge where they were to draw an object with both their most dominant and least dominant hand. Why not try it? It is harder than it looks. The children were amazed when they examined art which was made from recycled metal and then amazed Miss Colman by inventing and sketching their own. In the afternoon they used a range of materials and created a version of their creatures. These were then added to the whole class background before they ventured home.

There's something in the ice!!

For this 'Science Blast!' we were archaeologists discovering fossils in the ice! Just like the baby mammoth discovery, we needed to find the best way of melting ice, without damaging the historic artifact inside! Testing a range of methods, we discovered that warm salt-water allowed us to reach the mysterious object buried deep beneath the surface in the quickest time, whilst causing no damage to the 'fossil'.
