Today the children learned all about the skeleton. They found out that we have skeletons for support and protection. They were surprised to find out that some animals have their skeletons on the outside!

Using their research from yesterday, the children wrote some amazing Encyclopedia entries for the Javan Rhino!

This week, Y3W are going to be finding out about the Javan rhino as it is critically endangered. In the morning, they carried out research to find out where it comes from, what it looks like, what it eats and why it is at risk of becoming extinct. In the afternoon, the children used chalk and pencil to create some rhino inspired artwork!

Inspired by a letter from Bertie to Millie in Michael Morpurgo's Butterfly Lion, the children wrote a letter from Millie back to Bertie persuading him not to go into the army. I'm quite sure he would have changed his mind had he received these amazing letters!

2.5.17 - Visit to Meanwood Valley Urban Farm (Science)

Year 3 had a fantastic day at Meanwood Valley Urban Farm taking part in their Rocks workshop as part of our science topic. All children carried out experiments to find out about the different properties of rocks and tested some soils to find out their PH levels. Later the children visited the farm and bottle fed a baby lamb!

Y3W wrote some fantastic first person recounts of spotting a lion and her cub using ideas from Bertie's experiences, a character in our class reader, The Butterfly Lion. Some children tried really hard to improve their handwriting.

This week we began our class reader - The Butterfly Lion by Michael Morpurgo. Using the book as a stimulus, the children wrote two setting descriptions. One set in a desert and the other in a contrasting cold, icy setting.

Science Super Learning Day - 13.3.17

This week is British Science Week. To celebrate, the children used their scientific enquiry skills to carry out different experiments - one to find out which liquid was the best at cleaning coins and the other to see which material would keep a bottle of water the hottest. They made predictions, thought about a fair test, carried out experiments, recorded their results and wrote a conclusion. Everyone did a great job at becoming a scientist for the day!

The children put their problem solving and reasoning skills to good use when they attended the maths roadshow. Many children showed that they were able to work collaboratively to solve the problems.

The children really enjoyed starting work on the mosaic for the area around the entrance to the tunnel. They can't wait to see their work when it's completed.

World Book Day - 2.3.17

Year 3W all made a fantastic effort on World Book Day to dress as their favourite book character. Each child shared with the class who they were and why they had chosen that character.

As part of our Flowering Plants topic, the children cut open flowers to investigate their different parts. Some of the children were surprised by what they found!

RE - Trip 28.2.17

On Tuesday Y3W had an absolutely fantastic day at the Synagogue. William said "This is the best school trip!" The children enjoyed taking part in three workshops and learned lots about the Jewish faith in a "hands-on" way.

Today, Y3W wrote some absolutely fabulous poems about the dark and later they performed them. Have a read - everyone was extremely proud of their work.

The children used pencil skills to draw what they thought would be in Laszlo's basement in 'The Dark' by Lemony Snicket. They used a contrast of light and dark colours to create the effect of a torch shining into the basement.

Today, the children wrote some amazing setting descriptions bursting with descriptive vocabulary. Some chose to describe a forest scene at night and some chose to describe a forest scene during the day.

The children all became authors today. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed writing and illustrating their own book inspired by Lemony Snicket's 'The Dark'. Here are some extracts of their stories. I'm sure you will agree, they are fantastic.

The children all enjoyed reading Lemony Snicket's The Dark, the book that will inspire our writing this week. First, the children decided to write the story from the Dark's perspective. The children included some fantastic descriptive language. Later they planned their own version of the story and used the Animate application on the ipad to make an animation of part of their story.

The children carried out a test to find out if fairy bubbles really do last the longest! They discussed how to carry out the experiment and how to make it a fair test. After predicting what would happen, they carried out the experiment and made careful observations.

As part of our topic about Italy, the children have enjoyed finding out all about monuments and things to do in Rome! At the end of the week, they consolidated their knowledge and wrote a Non-Chronological Report all about Italy's capital city.

Bright Sparks Focus Week Day 5 - 25.11.16

After sending our explanation texts about light and shadows to Dr Doom and Prof Gloom, we received an email saying we had managed to convince them not to steal the light! Hoorah! We enjoyed creating this scratch artwork using light coloured crayons and dark coloured paint.

We combined our science learning about shadows with art to produce some fantastic shadow pictures. We then used watercolours to create silhouette pictures.

During assembly, the children found out that this week Dr Doom and Professor Gloom are planning to steal the light! The only way to stop them is to convince them that light is important. So, in the morning we found out that we use light to see and how to protect our eyes from the sun. In the afternoon we found out how shadows are formed and carried out an investigation into the size of shadows.

Read some of our amazing stories set on Bonfire Night. Everyone tried really hard to include descriptive language, conjunctions and prepositions!

Science Blast (Forces) - w/c 31.10.16

Y3W discussed what question they could investigate involving balls of different size. They then discussed how to carry out a fair test to find out which ball would hit the floor first when dropped from a height. After making predictions, they carried out the experiment and were surprised by their results!

17.10.16 Super Art Learning Day

The children had a fantastic day today. After warming up through using different techniques to draw fish, they looked as a scientist would at a variety of plants and trees and then used pencil skills to sketch what they noticed. They then thought about how they could improve their drawings. Later they used watercolours to paint leaves and thought about different shades and tones. As a class, Y3W also produced a piece of art using shape maths skills. All of their work was recorded in their own sketch book which they made themselves.

Around the World Focus Week Day 4 and 5 - 22.9.16/23.9.16

The children wrote some fantastic persuasive leaflets about Helsinki and everyone worked really hard to use their neatest handwriting! Later, they found out about Liverpool and compared the two cities.

The children continued learning about Helsinki and made some informative videos using the Puppet Pals application on the ipads.

For the rest of the week we are going to be finding out about Helsinki in Finland. Today we researched monuments in Helsinki and then used our pencil skills to sketch our favourite one. I think you'll agree that they are pretty impressive!

In the morning, we found out about the North and South poles. We labelled the Equator, Arctic and Antarctic on a diagram and found out about similarities and differences. We then found out what a capital city is and matched some countries with their capital cities. After researching Scandinavia, we tasted popular foods from that area and wrote persuasive sentences.

This week the children have continued drawing inspiration from the book "My Brilliant Book". They wrote a story set in an imaginary world and tried hard to include description. Everyone also tried extra hard to improve their handwriting. Look how neat it is! Fantastic work!

Science - Forces and Magnets w/c 5.9.16

This week, we began our topic of Forces and Magnets. The children became familiar with different forces such as air resistance, gravity, magnetism and friction. After they investigated how magnets attract and repel, they carried out an experiment to find out which materials are magnetic.
