Y1J had a fabulous time at Cannon Hall seeing all the new baby animals, watching the sheep racing, feeding and stroking the animals and playing in the fabulous play areas!

This week we have been learning all about Sea Turtles. We have researched why they are endangered and thought about what we can do to save them. Here are some videos of our learning!
The children have been working hard completing a piece of non-fiction writing all about meerkats. I was so impressed with the children's knowledge at the start of the week and they have been able to apply their learning from previous weeks which is a skill we are building up to. I think you'll agree, the children have done an amazing job so far and we cannot wait to see thier final piece when they bring everything together!

Today the children were asked to think about Sunny (the main character in Meerkat Mail) and think of all the reasons that he might want to leave his family for his great adventure. Some great ideas from younger meerkat's spitting whilst eating beetle larvae to mum never telling the tiny tearaways off and always blaming Sunny. Here are a couple of my favourite pieces.

Reading books - please could you make sure that all home reading books are returned on a Tuesday and a Friday should you wish to change for a new one. All children who bring their book into school and give it to a memeber of staff will be able to change their books. Please remind children to get their books out of their bags and put it in the reading book box ready to change.
This half term our topic will be 'History of Transport'. Over the weeks we will be focussing on how transport has changed over time. We will be learning about famous inventors, the Wright brothers and George Stephenson. Our topic will link in well with our DT unit where we will be making our own moving vehicles. In R.E we will be looking at what it means to belong to the the Christian and Islam religion. Our P.E unit for this half term is ball skills.
This week our focus week has been based on Lemony Snickett's 'The Dark'. We explored thoughts and feelings and created selfies to show different feelings. We also wrote our own stories and made books about our fears. We were also very lucky to have a visit from The Rainbow Factory and took part in a workshop based on the book.

This week our learning has been linked to our class reader 'Monsters'. We read part of the book, created our own monsters using Plasticine, described our monsters, created a setting for our monsters and then described this too. Take a look at some of our work...

This week we have been looking at the story 'Camille and the Sunflowers' which is a story about Van Gogh. We thought about the characters thoughts and feelings, described the characters and created a storyboard. Take a look at some of our work...

This week we have been learning about festivals in Judaism and Islam. We talked about religion and how these people celebrate different festivals including the Jewish festival of Sukkot and the Islam festival of Eid.

This week we have been learning about how Christmas is celebrated in France. We thought of questions to begin with, then we learnt some facts and finally we compared Christmas in France to Christmas in England.

As part of our learning in Bright Sparks Focus Week we have been looking at how light is used in different celebrations and cultures. We also made some firework pictures by using crayons and painting over the top with black paint. When the paint was dry we scratched it off to make light pictures.

We have had a great first week at school. In Y1J we have been talking about having a growth mindset. This is all about having a positive outlook on our learning and understanding that challenging tasks are good for exercising our brain. We talked about not giving up and learning from our mistakes.
