KS2 showed great determination and effort during a very hot Sports Day at Pudsey Grangefield School.

July 2016 - Design Technology/Religious Education

As part of our RE topic about Judaism, Y3W made clay pot candle holders that could be used to celebrate Hanukkah, the Jewish festival of light.

Health and Medicine Focus Week Day 4 (30.6.16)

In the morning, the children took part in a Fencing lesson where they practised their balance and co-ordination skills. Jack Johnston said, "This is the best ever morning in school!"

Today the children looked at healthy drinks. They tasted fruit and vegetable smoothies then created their own healthy drink. After, they designed a bottle. In the afternoon, they wrote a persuasion to encourage people to buy their drink!

After an exciting assembly where the children took part in a Ready, Steady, Cook style competition, they found out what calories are and what makes a balanced diet. Later, using this knowledge, they designed a day's food plan for a child. In the afternoon, the children thought about the importance of exercise and they took part in a yoga lesson.

This week, Y3W have learned how to play a song using two chords - C and Am. I'm sure you'll agree that they sound fantastic!

Express Yourself Focus Week - Day 4 26.5.16

Enjoy Y3/4's FANTASTIC performance of Rather Be!

The children learnt rhythm and pulse through Chair drumming! Later, they composed their own songs and performed them using the Ukulele.

After rehearsal for the performance on Thursday, the children created playscripts to introduce Gloomy Old Eeyore into the Happy Academy. In the afternoon, the children used Garageband to express "happiness" through music.

This morning Y3W created (then performed) some amazing poems about happiness. In the afternoon, they took part in a Boomwhacker work shop and made some fantastic music!

The children were given a picture and asked to express its meaning through dance, poetry, music etc. Their varied ideas were extremely creative.

After an enjoyable launch assembly the children created and illustrated their own quotes about happiness. Later, they produced art to represent happiness and wordles to express what happiness means to them. Inspired by the launch assembly, in the afternoon, the children rehearsed for their performance for parents.

The children wrote their own songs to express their beliefs about the world

The children used their imagination to write a diary entry about a day in the life of a Greek child out picking olives! Everyone worked really hard to include their thoughts and feelings into their writing.

The children made some Greek pots showing what daily life was like in Ancient Greek times.

The children developed their use of shading and contouring by using water colours to paint a picture of a flower in the style of Georgia O'Keeffe. The results were fantastic!

To begin our Science topic, we cut open some flowers and identified the different parts.

As part of our Ancient Greece topic we tasted pitta bread, olives, humus, taramasalata, feta cheese and Greek yoghurt. This helped us to think of appealing adjectives to include in our persuasive writing.

This week we began our new topic - Ancient Greece. We started by finding out where Greece is; what the climate and landscape is like and what foods can be found there. We became tour guides and made some persuasive adverts using the Puppet Pals application on the ipads.

In the morning we wrote the biography of Henry VIII. Later, we wrote a playscript for the story of Henry and Anne Boleyn, then we made puppets and acted out our playscripts.

In the morning we visited our museum and found out about kings and queens from different periods in history. In the afternoon we made some Top Trump style cards for Henry VIII's 6 wives!

Today the children used their art skills to make a collage of the Family Crest for each of Henry's wives. Later, they selected their own medium to make a portrait of King Henry VIII. I'm sure you'll agree that they are fantastic!

This week the children's learning will be centred around one of the most famous Tudors - King Henry VIII. Today, the children used the ipads to research and prepare an iMovie presentation about Henry and his wives. Later, they used their pencils skills to create portraits of King Henry. In the afternoon, they attended Henry's coronation! What a busy day!

Y3W rose to the challenge and took part in a whole school attempt to row across the English Channel and walk to the top of the Eiffel Tower! Fantastic effort Y3W!

British Science Week - 16.3.16

Today the children in Y3W became scientists for the day and found out about solids, liquids and gases. They carried out an experiment to see which fat melted the quickest, made predictions about what would happen to different liquids when frozen and carried out their own investigation into whether fairy bubbles really do last the longest!

Local Study - 10.3.16

The children in Year 3 and 4 went on a trip to the Owlcotes Centre as part of their geography topic. Whilst they were there, they asked members of the public questions linked to their geography. One shopper commented on how polite the children were! Later, they went on a maths trail around Asda then used their pencil skills to sketch Marks and Spencer.

Day 5 - Write Now Focus Week

SHOCK DISCOVERY! The characters from the story have been trapped in a cage! Who could have done it? We have our suspicions! We reported on the discovery live from the scene then we wrote Newspaper reports detailing the events.

Y3W used their ICT skills to re-create part of their version of Shh! We have a plan. They really enjoyed bringing their stories to life using the Puppet Pals application on the ipads.

Today we became authors and wrote our own book in the style of Chris Haughton. We enjoyed writing our stories in our Focus Week learning area.

Inspired by the bird in the story, we used our art and DT skills to make our own birds. We then wrote the story from the bird's perspective.

After a fantastic launch assembly, we read our focus week book - Shh! We have a plan by Chris Haughton. One of the characters in the book is a bird. We thought about where they bird might have come from and after designing the setting, we made a collage using different materials. Later we used our artwork to help us write the setting description.

During maths this week, we have been learning about 3d shapes. We made some 3d shapes and described the edges, faces and vertices. We looked for parallel and perpendicular lines in our shapes.

All the children made a fantastic effort today to come to school dressed as Victorian school children. Our school was transformed into a Victorian school where the children took part in Victorian reading, writing, arithmetic and PE lessons. They also discovered some Victorian artefacts. Later, the children wrote a diary recount of the day's events.

BREAKING NEWS ... a mysterious, gold person has been causing mayhem around school! The character, clothed head to foot in gold, interrupted our assembly then left leaving a trail of golden glitter behind. This week we made our own "fireworks" by mixing oil, water and food colouring. We found out that water and oil don't mix and made suggestions why this was.

BREAKING NEWS! A mysterious object has crash-landed into the school playground! The children were excited and curious as they went outside to investigate. Later they wrote Newspaper Reports about the discovery.

Today we found out lots of interesting facts about Neil Armstrong and his mission to the Moon. Later, we used our pencil skills to draw a portrait of Neil Armstrong.

We started the day by finding out what different parts of the Earth are called. After, we used chalk to draw pictures of what we thought space looked like. In the afternoon we did some research to find out about the moon and gravity. We also carried out a "Science Blast" to find out more about gravity.
