Welcome to Reception R

2015-2016 The Year of New Challenge

Children enjoy learning through play, and often talk about their learning as play. Learning in Reception is through real, meaningful experiences, which provide inspiration and ideas for future learning. Self- initiated play and adult led and directed learning, supports children in further developing areas of interest and ensures access to a wide range of opportunities.  We look forward to sharing all of this with you, in part, through this class page.

Key Dates and Information:

Theme for learning - Changes
Now that we are nearing the end of the school year, we are finding out about how things change. We are caring for tadpoles and froglets, caterpillars and of course Jon the snail and family.
During this period of transition in school we are planning exciting visits to Year One and adding some of the Year One routines to each school day.  For example playing out in the KS1 playground in a morning wth Year 1 and 2 children and visiting the ICT suite in class groups.

Workshop in Term 3
Tuesday 12th July will be the last workshop.  We hope you can come along and spend time with your child.  Looking at their learning and observing our growing caterpillars and tadpoles are just some of the things we will be doing.

Small Group Visits
The last two small group visits will take place during the week beginning 11th July; children who have received a letter are visiting Goodalls Ice Cream shop in Tong and Horsforth Pick Your Own.  They will be bringing back delicious treats for all the children in Reception!
We hope your child has enjoyed whatever their additional small group visit has involved.  Over the year children have taken part in one or more of the following small group visit:  Posting letters to school and through the door of children's homes who live near to school in order to find out more about where people live and one anothers families; visiting the Lego shop and purchasing Lego for school which we used to make a Lego area in the classroom; visited Leeds City Museum to find out more about animals in preparation for the whole cohort visit to an animal park; visit Goodalls to buy ice cream for all of Reception; visit Horsforth Pick Your Own to buy fruit for all of Reception.

Transition to Year One
On Wednesday 6th and Wednesday 20th July the children are visiting their new teacher in Year One, spending the morning with them to experience what being in this year group will be like.  There will be lots of fun challenges planned.  Further to the letter sent home regarding the last two days in school (Monday 25th July and Tuesday 26th July), your child will move into their new Year One class on the Monday and so will complete their academic year in Reception on Friday 22nd July.

Reception Sports Afternoon - Tuesday 19th July; 2.00pm to the end of school
You will have received a letter informing you about our Sports afternoon.  We will be using the KS1 playground and the Reception outdoor classroom for the children to complete a carousel of sporting challenges in their house teams.
They will be able to earn points for every challenge they take part in which will contribute to their house team points total for the end of the school year.
If you are able to come along you are welcome to join in with encouraging the children to do their best as they move around the different challenges.

We had a fabulous day at the Yorkshire Wildlife Park. The children walked their socks off as they explored the park. We saw most of the animals and enjoyed everything we did; the journey there and back, the animals, meeting new people and having a picnic in the sunshine.

Yeadon Tarn

The children have travelled to Yeadon Tarn in the school minibus throughout the week. There were lots of different vehicles seen on the journey and throughout our visits to the tarn. We found bendy and secret paths, an "enchanted wood," a magical dragonfly and all the expected things such as birds, people, boats and a surprise vehicle, planes. The children were excited to hear about the visits as children returned to school and were fantastic representatives of Primrose Hill.

Writing inspired by Yeadon tarn

The children watched film footage of their visit to Yeadon Tarn and looked at photographs of their adventures. They then chose how to write to share their experience with others; a story, re-telling in sentences, or an information book. We are proud of how well the children are using their phonic knowledge and developing their knowledge of tricky words.

Shh! We Have a Plan...

We have been focusing on a book called 'Shh! We Have a Plan' as part of our Write On focus week. We started the week by writing about what we thought was going to happen in the story. After that we made our own birds and hung them on the giant tree in our classroom. Here are some photos of our learning...

Developing Writing Skills and Knowledge

Both inside and outdoors the children are challenged to develop their gross and fine motor control. Developing muscles in the arms, hands and fingers helps children to develop their ability to hold and control writing tools. Have a look at some of the ways we have been challenging the children.
