w/c 8.7.13- Great Outdoors Focus Week

Thursday 11th July 1:30pm-3:15pm- Maths trail around Pudsey.

Monday 15th July- Sports afternoon for KS2. All children need their outdoor PE kits. Children should wear a t-shirt which represents their house team (blue, yellow, red or green)

The Great Outdoors

Day 1- We started the week by finding out about the Countryside Code and then we made up TV adverts to tell younger children about how to be safe. In Maths we did some orienteering outdside. We used our calculation skills to answer clues and then tried to crack the code. During PE we tried out different activities and saw how many of each activity we could do in 1 minute. We are going to try and beat our scores throughout the week. Day 2- We investigated the artist Georgia O'Keefe. We sketched different flowers and then wrote our own poems about the flowers we had drawn.

Day3 -5. We went on a maths trail around Pudsey. We then drew flowers and painted them with water colours. They are fantastic- have a look.

We have been doing lots of practical maths linked to the topic of measure. We investigated different contrainers and made our own Rocky Road. We also watched the children playing their clarinets and flutes.

On Wednesday the children investigated different habitats around school. They had lots of fun! On Friday it was Maths Super Learning Day. We designed our own race course using angles and measurements and then made our own bridge to see which could hold the most weight.

In school we have been learning about traditional stories. We wrote our own ending to the traditional Cinderella story. Here are a few.

We split into two groups and performed two different songs. We hope you like them.

International focus week

Day 3. We used the djembe drums to make up a simple rhythm. We had lots of fun! Day 4 and 5- We painted our drums to add Chinese patterns in black paint. We then practised our French vocab including weather and animals. We made our own zoo out of plastercine and discussed the animals in French.

Day 2. Today we collected data around the classroom to answer a range of questions about different countries. We then started to make our chinese drum using pots and papier mache. Finally we made fact pages about China using our research from day 1.

Day 1. We boarded our flight on Primrose Hill Airways and landed in China. We investigated the items in our suitcase. In small groups we researched China.

Friday 24th May

During our RE lesson on Friday 24th May we complete lots of fun activities. We were learning about Islam and their pilgrimage to Mecca. We also met Reception's snail John.

Super Learning Day- Maths May 2013

On Monday 20th May it was Maths Super Learning day in school. In our class in the morning we had to work within a budget to design a Roald Dahl Theme Park or a Roald Dahl tea party. The children worked in small teams to complete the challenge and then had to answer questions about their budget. In the afternoon we went into the hall and did some PE linked to Maths. We timed ourselves doing different activties and then had to add the totals, double the totals etc.

On Friday 26th April a lady from the Jewish heritage centre came into speak to the year 3/4 children about Jewish beliefs

Our literacy topic has been focusing around the book: My funny Family. The children completed some art work describing the characters in the book. In science our topic has been plants. We investigated what helps plants to grow with an experiment.

In Literacy we have been following and writing instructions. We had to give verbal instructions to a partner about how to draw a picture. Spot the differences between the two pictures. For our learning log we also followed instructions to make our own frogs. We then wrote instructions about how to make Apple crumble. We made it in class and it was really yummy!!!

Our new Prefects were announced on Friday 19th April. Here they are looking very proud of themselves.

World Book Day

On World Book Day we dressed up as characters from traditional stories.

Friend or Foe

The children have been reading the fantastic book Friend or Foe by Micheal Morpurgo. They had a go at retelling the story in their own words. Here are some examples.

Day 1- Children wrote an explanation text about their trip to Armley Mills. We then worked with songwriter Henry Priestman to write and perform some songs around the Olympic theme. All the year 3/4 children got together at the end of the day to perform their songs. Day 2- We started looking at the Jolly Postman (our school text) today. We made posters about all the features in the text and then we started creating our own page to go in the Jolly Postman. Here are some of our illustrations. Look back tomorrow to see our completed Jolly Postman pages.

Today we spent the day creating our very own Jolly Postman page. We created the poems to go on each page and then wrote our own letters to different fairy tale characters. Look at the pictures and videos of our pages. More to come. Miss Agar ran a lunch time club creating magical potions after the children gained inspiration from reading George's Marvellous Medicine.

We used learning grids to plan our own traditional tale. We then acted our story out, before we wrote it in our challenge books. Some children wrote it as a story, other children chose to make a story board.

Armley Mills Trip

On Friday 8th March we went to Armley Mills. The children dressed up as 1940s school children and completed a role play in the 1940s classroom. In the afternoon we had a tour of the museum and then spent some time in the gift shop. We had a fantastic day!

w/c 28.1.13 Exploration focus week

Day 1: Creation of the Universe. On day 1 we learnt all about the Big Bang Theory and created a sound story to represent the Big Bang. We then chose a planet to research and created a fact file using a range of mediums (e.g. pastels, water colours). Finally we found out about different creation stories from different cultures and religions and created our own creation story. Day 2: Dinosaurs. We started the day by observing dinosaurs in their natural habitat and taking notes. Miss Cathers then told us that Dinosaur foot prints had been found in the school grounds so we went on a hunt and measured the footprints. When we got back into class we plotted where we had found the footprints using a map and coordinates. In the afternoon we classified the dinosaurs using a classification tree and then designed our own dinosaur using characteristic from other dinosaurs.

Day 3: The Ice Age: We started the day by investigating cold temperatures and negative numbers. Then we looked how animals are adapted to cold climates and animals that lived in the Ice Age. After that we designed, made and described a new animal for the Ice Age. Day 4: The Stone Age-Today the children led their own learning and decided what they wanted to find out and how they wanted to show their learning. The children then presented their learning to the rest of the class. We also had a visitor in from the Discovery Centre which the children enjoyed. Day 5: The Future. The Children designed products for the furture and completed a Dragons Den style pitch. They also wrote letters to put in the Primrose Hill time capsule.

W/c 21/1/13

We have been learning about how materials can change state. We did lots of investigations and activties about solids, liquids and gases. Which resullted in us designing our own experiment testing how quickly ice lollies melt in different enviromental conditions. We also looked at crazy soap and instant snow- which we loved!!!!! In Maths we have been investigating and learning all about 3D shapes and their properties.

Y3/4C Food for Thought Focus Week

During Food for Thought Focus week we made Banana Cake in small groups. This helped us to use our measuring skills that we had learnt in class.

Cricket in the classroom

Miss Cathers and Miss Limbert took some year 3/4 children to Headingley stadium on 14.11.12. The children had a tour round the stadium and had the chance to play some cricket games.

Angel of Nitshill Road by Anne Fine

In class we have been reading The Angel of Nitshill Road. We have been doing lots of learning around the book, including role play and character descriptions. We wrote our own descriptions about a bullying situation. Here are some examples:

We started our new history topic "Britain during World War 2". We learnt about when World War 2 was and plotted its place on a timeline in relation to other major historical events. We also listened to Neville Chamberlain announce the war and completed freeze frames to show families reactions to the announcement.

Discovery Centre visit

During our science topic we had some visitors from the Discovery Centre visit our class. They brought lots of different animal skulls and we were able to look at them closely. We compared the similarities and differences between the skulls.

During food focus week we did some descriptions about different foods. We then made our own advert to persuade people to buy the foods. We perfromed them in front of the class.

Holly's Christmas Song
