Welcome to the class page of Y2D.

Mrs Dickson, Mrs Johnson and Mr Gisborne

This half term our topic is The Seaside. We will be spending time finding out about the children's experiences of the seaside as well as finding out about seaside holidays in the past.

We have been learning about and comparing the books of Julia Donaldson and Roald Dahl in literacy. In science we have been learning about the properties of different materials.

We have had lots of excitement this half term including International Focus Week where we learned all about Canada and an exciting trip to Filey on 25th June.

This week it is Great Outdoors focus week and most of our learning has taken place outside.

Observational Drawing

As part of Great Outdoors Focus Week we have been learning to draw landscapes using a viewfinder. We only drew what we could see through the window and made pastel pictures which we turned into an outdoor gallery!

Measuring Outdoors

As part of Great Outdoors Focus Week we went outside and measured parts of the school grounds and natural objects on the field.

Seaside Visit

We travelled to Filey on the Yorkshire coast by coach. On the beach we made fantastic sand cities, sculptures and collected shells. We really enjoyed our packed lunches and ice lollies!

International Focus Week

During International Focus Week our learning was all based around Canada. Bordering the USA and ruled by our Queen, Canada is the 2nd biggest country in the world! We learned about Niagara Falls, Canadian animals, ice hockey and became an Iroquois tribe to perform a 'smoke dance' in assembly.

Den Day

On Tuesday 21st May our class worked alongside Chris to design and build our own dens. The day started with children working in their groups to design a flag and decide upon a team name. Maths skills were used throughout the day as children made pyramids and cubids from sticks and plastercine before going on to build a real den with bamboo canes, zip ties and camouflage sheets! The children developed their team work skills and communicated throughout the day with their team members. We had a really enjoyable learning experience which I'm sure the children will remember for a long time.

Maths Super Learning Day

Mrs Johnson's shop - children could buy items at half price (or even a quarter of the price for some items!) and then had to find the correct money to pay! We also took part in the Car Number Plate Challenge! Children had to crack a code and find the total of the numbers and letters in each number plate! We then had an afternoon of puzzles and problem solving activities!

Puppets

Well done to all the children in our class for trying so hard to perfect their sewing skills. Many children overcame difficulties and showed great determination and perseverance, especially when threading needles and sewing the two pieces of felt together!

Bog Babies

We read the story 'Bog Baby' by Jeanne Willis and Gwen Millward. Then we made our own Bog Babies using salt dough. We went outside to find things to make our Bog Babies a home, leaves, twigs etc. Our Bog Babies are lovely and cosy in their new homes - especially with the fluffy feathers!

Exploration Focus Week

We had a wonderful exploration focus week. Each day began with children travelling back in time. We began at the very beginning of time when the universe was created and found out about space and the solar system. We then learned all about dinosaurs, followed by the Ice age, Stone age and finally children looked to the future! A time capsule has been buried in the school grounds with contributions from each class.

Food for Thought Focus Week

We spent a really exciting and interesting week finding out about food. We investigated where our food comes from and looked for different countries using maps and globes. We tasted food from around the world and made our 'Primrose Pass it on' dish Filled Jacket Potatoes. Sophie's dad came in to talk to us about fish, he brought in lots of different fish for us to see, feel and smell! Many children from our class joined in the crumble workshop after school and enjoyed tasting different breakfast dishes, flapjack porrige and fruity tortillas.
