Key Stage 1 Record Holder Event

Children in Key Stage 1 have been practicing hard at their PE skills this week. The best from each class took part in a competition to see who would be the Key Stage record holders at bat and ball, shuttle runs and skipping.

The Great Outdoors Focus Week: 12-7-13

What a lovely outdoors week! The children have been doing outdoor artwork, poetry and Maths. We have also been writing spooky stories then shared them with Y2 by a campfire.

Maths Super Learning Day: 28-6-13

Today we have had Maths Super Learning Day! We have been making clay castles using 3D shapes and describing them. We collected some data in a tally chart and did a pictogram about the class' favourite seaside activity.

ICT 20.6.13

In ICT this half term we are learing how to control items with ICT. The children enjoyed programming these car robots with a set of directions (forwards, backwards, left and right). They enjoyed using their bodies to make bridges for the cars to go through.

In Science this week Y1D did an experiment to find out which type of paper was the strongest. Have a look at the pictures which show the children carrying out their experiment.

Literacy 17.6.13

This week in Literacy, we are basing our stories around the class reader we are reading at the moment - The Magic Faraway Tree. Have a look at these pictures of children searching for pictures of witches, goblins and gnomes in our outdoor classroom. After finding the pictures the children then wrote descriptions of the characters.

Phonics check

Y1D did exceptionally well in the phonics check this week. You should all be very proud of yourselves. As a reward for the effort the children have put into their phonics work, we all had an ice lolly outside this afternoon. Well done Y1D!

Stories about pirates 14-6-13

The children have received letters from the pirates every day this week demanding that they do different tasks. At the end of the lesson Mrs Coulson came into the classroom with Tricky! The pirates returned him due to all the hard work the class had done this week. Well done Y1D! Well done to Tom, Stella, Aimee, Teigan, Alesha and Zak whose amazing stories I have chosen to put on here this week.

Science 11.6.13

This week in Science we have been investigating which materials float or sink and which materials are magnetic. We explored the classroom to find magnetic objects. All the children had an electronic device (called smart response) to make their predictions on.

When Y1D came in this morning, they noticed that pirates had ransacked our classroom. They took Tricky and left us lots of clues. The pirates wrote us a letter giving us instructions that we must follow if we ever want to see Tricky alive again! The children explored the classroom and found lots of interesting clues.

7-6-13 International Focus Week: Music

We found that Portuguese sailors first bought the ukulele to Hawaii! So all week we have been learning 'I am sailing.' We have played percussion, glockenspiels and of course ukuleles. *Video of assembly performance to follow.

For the second half of the week we have been learning about Greece. We tasted some olives, tomatoes, pitta bread, houmous and feta cheese. Then we answered Maths word problems about how many were eaten! We learnt a Greek myth called Theseus and the Minotaur. We acted out the story with our friends. The performances were great! To finished off the week Lily's Grandmas kindly came into school to tell us about her experiences in China. We have also been doing Maths facts with a parachute and learning different countries flags outdoors.

4-6-13: International Week (Portugal)

What a wonderful week we are having! On Monday we flew to Portugal on Primrose Airlines! We have been doing lots of reading about Portugal and made some non-fiction books with all the information we found out. We read that the symbol of Portugal is the rooster and learnt a very strange story about it! We have also tasted some Portuguese food and did a pictogram about the classes favourites. In Portugal there are lots of painted tiles so we decided to paint some our own. While we were doing this we learnt about symmetry in Maths.

This week we have been given some tadpoles! We have learnt all about how they turn into frogs and how to look after them. We also had a French afternoon. We found out about places like the Effiel Tower and tried to make one out of sticks. Even though it was really hard we didn't give up!

This week we have carried on our learning about plants and planted our seeds. One of them we put in a clear container so wecan see how it grows. In literacy we have been using non-fiction books to find out information about the seaside. Our target ths week has been to use subheadings to organise our writing. Everyone has done some amazing non-fiction writing this week.

This week we have planted some beans in Science and predicited what will happen to them. Look at the brilliant non-fiction writing we did about how to plant a look after a bean plant. This afternoon we have been painting seaside pictures and experimenting with adding water to paint to make it thinner.

This week we have started learning about the seaside! We made seaside posters with our friends. In Literacy we have been gathering ideas for fantasy stories using the book 'Where the Wild Things Are'. We made own wild things to write stories about. Some of them were really funny!

This week we have been learning about variation in Science. We have learned how to group living things using the internet and non-fiction books. On Thursday we went on a trip to Pudsey library. When we got back to school we had a lovely relaxing time reading. On Friday Daniel bought in his African Land Snails and we did lots of research about them. Then we wrote some reports and went down to Reception to tell them everything we had found out. Here are some of the best ones.

Two children have gone missing! No one knows what is going on! Each day we have been finding out more and more clues to help them. Today we spoke to their Mum on Skype - she is very worried. Can you work out where they are?? Also this week we have been lucky enough to work with storytellers, musicans and illustrators.

We have carried on our traditional stories topic by doing lots of drama. We have also used plasticine in Maths to make some traditional story characters out of 3d shapes. Thursday was World Book Day - can you guess which characters we are dressed up as?

This week we have started our 'traditional stories' topic! We have been very busy turning our classroom into a forest: making collages, turning the role play area into a cottage and cutting out lots and lots of leaves! We finished the week describing some characters.

This week we have been learning to give directions. We practised all week and then put the skills to good use by writing directions to the time capsule for 2050! Exploration Focus Week: 1-2-13

We have had a very exciting week exploring the history of our Earth! Each day we have been in the Time Machine and have gone back in time! We have been to the beginning of the Universe, to the dinosaurs, the Ice Age, the Stone Age and today we went to the future!

This week we have been learning about plants and animals in our local environment. We have been searching for them on the field (after building some snowmen...) and found lots of minibeasts hiding under logs! In our literacy learning we have been using non-fiction books to research about plants and animals and using our research to write information with headings, labels and captions. As well as all that Y1D have also been busy learning how to sew! This is because we are making animal puppets in DT. Well done to everyone because even though we found it hard to start with we kept trying and didn't give up!

This week we have been talking and writing about how to be a good learner and how to reach our goals. We have put all our ideas on the wall so we can remind ourselves when we are finding things tricky!

Christmas week: 19-12-12

What a wonderful week we are having! It began with a visit from Pere Noel! We had a lovely time at the Church. We learnt about the Christmas story and made crafts to go with each part. Some children even got to dress up and go on the stage! Well done to the Choir who did a great peformance too. You can watch a video of it by looking at the 'Pupils' page and then 'Learning and Photo Gallery'. Today was the Christmas party. We played games, danced and ate, ate and ate. Thank you to the parents for providing us with so much lovely food.

This week we have been on a trip to a Sikh temple. A Sikh temple is called a Gurdwara. This is because we are learning about special places in R.E. We found out lots of interesting facts about how Sikh's worship and the Sikh religion. Have a look at some examples of the fantastic pictures and descriptions of special places that the children produced in R.E.

Food Focus Week

We had a great Food Focus Week. We made gingerbread men and used them to write our own versions of the story. We learnt about food from around the world and where food comes from. The highlight of the week was designing and making our own pizzas. Then we invited Y1P to our Pizza Party! It was so much fun.

Ukulele Concert

Here is the video of our ukulele concert in October. We practised all week and managed to raise 35 pounds! With the money we bought ten backpacks and filled them with pads, pencils, toys and clothes for the children in Africa. Well done Y1D and thank you to all the parents that were able to come.
