We had a fantastic time on our trip finding out about the properties of soil and carrying out experiments on rocks.

Over the past couple of week in PE we have been looking at developing simple jumps to more complicated ones. This is called dynamic balances to a controlled landing. This week we worked with a partner and put together a simple routine.

Today we wrote a newspaper report on the progress of the building work and the missing steel framework! Later we designed a new school logo!

In maths we had a budget and had to furnish the Extended Services Room without over spending. Some of us found it a bit tricky! After a visit to the site to see how the build was coming on, we made some TV adverts to encourage the local community to use the room.

We had a huge surprise during assembly in the morning. Lord Sugar arrived and gave us all a task - to design the Extended Services Room! First we discussed our ideas then we drew up a plan. After that we learnt some new DT skills as we made the room which we had planned.

Science Blast

For our science blast, we decided to find out what would happen if we fed plants with different liquids. We fed them with water, orange juice, lemonade, coke and milk. We were surprised at what happened!

Focus Week started with a surprise for the children! Every child had a go on the machinery that is being used for the school expansion. The children then used this experience to write stories about transforming building machinery!

Vikings!

Vikings have arrived in Y3/4W! Here are our diary entries about crossing the North Sea from Scandinavia to head for England. We made some Viking helmets to help us think and feel like Vikings as we wrote our diaries.

In the morning we wrote the beginning to our stories then in the afternoon we began our animations for a part of our story using "Animate" on the ipads.

After an exciting assembly where the children were introduced to the story of Alice in Wonderland, the children began to plan their own version of the story. They designed their own settings and wrote character descriptions. Later, they experimented with stop frame animation using the ipads.

On Friday, we enjoyed having Connie's Dad (who works for the National Grid) come in and tell us all about electricity. He even brought a piece of the National Grid with him! Afterwards, we made some pictures which lit up by attaching an electrical circuit to the back.

We found out that lightening is caused by static electricity. Here is some of our writing which describes being caught in the middle of a thunder and lightening storm!

We carried out a scientific experiment to find out which materials are conductors of electricity and which materials are insulators of electricity. Some of our results surprised us!

Today we investigated circuits and their symbols. We looked at different circuits and decided whether they would light the bulb or not.

First we found out about the different types of electricity and what appliances run on electricity. Next we made a time line of the history of electricity. After that we found out about lightening and static electricity. In the afternoon we investigated circuits and how to make a bulb light up. We finished our day by producing a lightening inspired piece of artwork. What a busy day!

Our science topic this half term is "Light". This week we used torches to investigate what materials are good for reflecting light. We also carried out an experiment to find out what happens to the length of a shadow when the light source moves.

During our art lessons we have been practising our pencils skills and painting with water colours. We used our pencil skills to draw the other half of Raphael's Sistine Madonna and then painted it with water colours.

We practised our teamworking skills as we matched the city to its capital. We then used atlases to check any that we were unsure of.

Today we made some Italian pasta and pizza! We then tasted the pizza and pasta together with olives, pecorino cheese and icecream. We thought of words to desribe the smell, taste and texture which inspired us to write poems about Italian food.

We used the ipads and laptops to research the city of Pisa. We found out where in Italy Pisa is; what famous monuments are there; famous people born there; the climate and lots more!
